Visitors from all corners of the globe, especially Islamic nations, are expected in Kano soon to witness the coronation of the 14th Emir of Kano, HRH Muhammad Sanusi II.
The event first slated for September 6 was postponed for security reasons, though the state government denied it; it said it was to make adequate preparations for the venue of the celebration. But Boko Haram suicide bombers struck in the commercial city mid-September, killing at least 15 people at a government college.
Emir Sanusi’s coronation, expected by October 19, will be the first to be witnessed in Kano in 51 years. The last Emir, Ado Bayero, was coronated in 1963. His death in early June 2014 led to the selection of Sanusi by the kingmakers and the state government.
The new Emir does not yet enjoy a cosy relationship with the federal government led by President Goodluck Jonathan. Formerly known as Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Kano king was the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2009 to February 20, 2014, when the President suspended him. He had alleged that $49.8billion and later $20billion was missing from the nation’s coffers. Investigations connected with terror funding have also been linked to a CBN official who worked under Sanusi.
