The building of Reigners Bible Church in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, collapsed about 11am Saturday, killing and wounding scores of worshippers. The number of those killed by iron bars used for the roof is put at 20 to 35. Scores of others were wounded.
Some reports said Governor Udom Emmanuel was among the wounded; others said he was yet to reach the church when the roof of the building came down.
A pastor, Akan Week, was being consecrated on the occasion, witnesses said.
Rescue efforts were ongoing Saturday afternoon, even as the dead and the wounded were being moved to hospitals and mortuaries.
