Akufo-Addo Takes Over in Ghana

Nana Akufo-Addo has been sworn in as Ghana’s president.

Akufo-Addo, 72, defeated incumbent John Dramani Mahama in an election in December. His New Patriotic Party also won a majority of 169 seats in the legislature while Mahama’s party National Democratic Congress has 106 seats.

“Public service is just that: service, and is not to be seen as an opportunity for making money,” the new Ghanaian leader said on Saturday. “I shall protect the public purse by insisting on value for money.”

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria witnessed the inauguration together with some other African leaders.
