David Rockefeller, Capitalism Evangelist, Dies at 101

American banker and philanthropist David Rockefeller died on Monday morning at his home in New York. He was aged 101 years.

Chase Manhattan Bank was regarded as the family business of the Rockefellers, even though the family owned not more than 5% of its shares. The bank wielded vast influence around the world on the watch of David who preached the gospel of American capitalism.

His forefather, John D. Rockefeller, was the tycoon who founded the Standard Oil Company in the 19th century and built a fortune that made him America’s first billionaire and his family one of the richest and most powerful in the nation’s history.
