Varsities Get Real with Entrepreneurship Training

Nigerian universities are coming to terms with graduate unemployment in the country. Since degree and postgraduate degree certificates can no longer put food on the table, students and former students are now encouraged to acquire skills that would enable them to set up a business of their own.

The irony is that the training programmes are conducted within the four walls of many a university offering courses like engineering, vocational education, business administration and pharmacy. In other words, the universities know they have not been preparing their students for self-employment.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is one institution that does not feel ashamed of inviting experts to its campuses to teach its students valuable skills. Now on its website is an advertisement for “ADMISSION INTO 2018/2019 PROFICIENCY TRAINING SKILLS”.

“The Centre for Technical Vocational Education, Training and Research (CETVETAR-UNN) hereby invites students, staff and members of the public into her various training skills scheduled to commence on September 14, 2018 – December 15, 2018.”
