35 Killed, Hundreds Injured in Petrol Explosion

No fewer than 35 people were killed and over 100 severely injured after an explosion occurred at a fuel station in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, Nigeria, on Monday.

A head-on collision between a motorcycle and a tricycle on a road near the station where gas was leaking caused the explosion, witnesses said.

Many vehicles including fuel tankers, motorcycles and tricycles were caught up in the inferno. Those who rushed to the scene to see what was happening were also burnt, as were motorists on the busy Lafia–Abuja road.

While many were burnt beyond recognition, the injured were taken to hospitals around.

The casualty figure is likely to increase in a few days. Many had first-degree burns and medical facilities are scarce.
